Longest wait……… and rock like patience

Many persons have a name which is very appropriate for them. Like a girl with the name Suhasini may have beautiful smile, a boy with the name Vineeth may be very obedient and so on and so forth. Some times the names work the other way around like this one.
When giving her the name ‘Damayanthi’ Who would have imagined that along with the her name she will also inherit the pain.(‘Damayanthi’ was a mythological character who went through the various pains of life for her husband .)

Damayanthi was born in one of the North Indian state. She was a sports woman. She won the National Badminton Championship for 3 consecutive years. She was also one of the Arjuna award winner. She met Capt. Vijay Thambe when she was 19. It was a love at first sight. They both decided to get marry. Life was beautiful for Damayanthi with all her achievements and a loving husband. But life isn’t always fair to somebody.

A month after their marriage Capt. got a call from the border. That was the time of Indo-Pak war. Capt. fought bravely and was appreciated, he had alone killed nearly 30 enemies.. But time had decided something else for him. Capt’s plane was in trouble in the enemy land and with out a way he had to land on their land. Waiting for the chance they captured him.

On hearing this although Damayanthi panicked, she was relieved to some extent to know that he was alive. War ended and both the sides released some war prisoners but Capt wasn’t one of them. He was still there in jail. There were many evidences for his existence.

A book on Benezeer Bhutto and a news report said that there was a war prisoner by that name. In 1987 or so one of Capt’s uncle went to Pakistan with under-19 cricket team as a manager. He went to the jail to meet his nephew. He was given 30mins to meet, but again the time was really cruel and 30 min were already over when finally his uncle could recognize Capt.. He couldn’t even utter a word.

After that once Pakistan and Indian government had mutually agreed upon permitting the relatives of war prisoners to visit them. Damayanthi went to Pakistan with all the hope in the world. The misfortune continued there too. The governments backed up at the last moment and she had to return from Pakistan with out meeting her husband.

Damanthi has met nearly every PM, human rights commission and various other people but with out success. She was a in a miserable condition with out a job but thanks to Arjuna award because of which she got appointed as a PT teacher in one of the schools.
Today she spends her time between teaching and waiting…….

Damayanthi’s family has lost hope a long time ago and they even asked Damayanthi get marry again. But she refused to do so and She is waiting for her husband with the same hope, love, affection, faith even after 33 years.!

“Rah dekhte aankhein thakhi nahin hain,
Surat na sahi kadomon kein nishan hi dekhna chahe hain,
Par kambakht yeh waqt dhool ke saath,
Unhe bhi uda le chali hain”
